What is a DIY Divorce? A DIY divorce is a “Do it yourself” divorce. Here in New York it is called doing it pro se. Pro se means literally, “for self.” There are some scenarios where a DIY divorce makes sense. If you have no assets or children and your and your spouse are on friendly terms and you are working together on the divorce and you are fairly proficient with paperwork and filing papers and filling out papers, and you don’t mind doing the leg work back and forth, then maybe you can handle the matter yourself. Why pay a lawyer $1000 for something that you can easily handle?
But if you don’t have the time to handle it properly, or you have an acrimonious relationship with your spouse, or there are children and assets, then you may want to think about getting an attorney instead of doing a DIY divorce.
