Svetlana Khorkina is a famous Russian gymnast and seven time Olympic medalist, turned nude model and political activist. Svetlana lives in Russia and is very active politically since she retired from gymnastics. Says Wikipedia:
Curiously, when it was time to give birth to her baby, she flew to the United States and birthed her son at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. So her baby has American citizenship even though Svetlana is Russian and lives in Russia and has set down all her roots in Russia.
It’s not as if the American family courts can adjudicate anything having to do with her son as far as custody, visitation, support, or whatever else. Because neither the child nor the mother is domiciled in the U.S. and chances are his “home state” will be the state in which she lives in Russia.
In fact, if she wanted to leave Russia against the will of the child’s dad — i.e. a “kidnapping” type of scenario (let’s say they had a falling out for example) it’s not as if she can just do that just because the child is “American.” Cause Russia is the only place the child knows as home and so the Hague Convention would probably apply, and she would need the permission of the father in order to bring the child to America to reside her permanently with him.
So what was the point of her birthing him in America when she lives in Russia and is even involved in the political scene there? Oh. Wait. I don’t think Russia is a signatory to the Hague. So the Hague would not even apply in her case. (See our Hague Convention posts here: http://www.divorcesaloon.com/index.php?s=hague+convention
But I still suspect she could have some trouble if she wanted to bring the child out of Russia without the father’s permission…who is the baby’s daddy, btw? She’s not married. And she’s too gorgeous to have to resort to artificial insemination. So you know there is a daddy floating around out there somewhere.
Well, whoever he is, he has rights as the father of the child and Svetlana would not be able to just remove the child from Russia and bring him here to America. So I still don’t get what benefit she derived from birthing him in the United States.
UPDATE: Okay. Well, my sources didn’t give me the full story. Svetlana is married or was married to a Russian guy named Levan Uchaneishvili according to celebrity baby.com:
Three-time world champion gymnast Svetlana Khorkina and her husband, Georgian (Russia) actor Levan Uchaneishvili, welcomed their first child, a boy they have named Vladislav (“Slava” for short) on July 21 at LA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Slava weighed 6.5 lbs. Longtime friend and coach Yefim Furman said the baby looks exactly like Svetlana.
