CANADA: Canadian court nixes a Talaq divorce (Sharia/Islamic divorce)

Really quickly,¬† (I know I am on hiatus yet I keep coming across these stories!) I just read about a Canadian case where a Muslim woman had had a Talaq divorce (“I divorce you three times…” you know how they do it, right?) and so she’s a Canadian citizen and she wanted to sponsor her Canadian husband (the new spouse) and Canadian court basically refuses to recognize the first divorce. The courts don’t feel that just saying to someone on the phone, “I divorce you” three times is enough for a valid divorce. I have to say, I am in total agreement on this issue. With all due respect to other people’s customs and religious persuasions, that practice strikes me as slightly ludicrous.
