Can you be forced into divorce?

Yes you can. Even if your spouse wants a divorce and you don’t, in most states your spouse will be able to get the divorce without your consent. In New York, your spouse may be forced to prove that he or she has “grounds” for a divorce if you mount a challenge. But even in New York, there are ways to squeeze the divorce out of you one way or another–using the kids, money or some other method of persuasion. Usually, if one spouse wants out of the marriage, you can pretty much say the marriage is kaput. And yes, that you will be forced out of the marriage kicking and screaming if that’s how you choose to do it.
