The famed director of such classics as Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown has been arrested in Zurich Switzerland on an outstanding 31 year warrant. He had plead guilty in 1978 of rape of a 13 year old girl. He is being held in detention pending a hearing on whether he should be extradited to the United States to resume trial.
The French born Polish Polanski flee to France following his guilty plea and never stood trial here in the U.S. According to the Wall Street Journal:
The victim, Samantha Geimer, who long ago identified herself publicly, has joined in Mr. Polanski’s bid for dismissal, saying she wants the case to be over. She sued Mr. Polanski and reached an undisclosed settlement.
Yikes. This is a tough one. I mean, he did a wrong thing, that’s for sure. But at this point, I’m not sure I see the point of this arrest and the detention in the Swiss Police’s custody. But…
