BREAKING DIVORCE NEWS:
Jamie McCourt is chief executive officer (“CEO”) of the LA Dodgers franchise and she is also the soon to be ex Mrs. Frank McCourt as the two co-owners of the ball team have filed for divorce. Jamie wants to keep her job and her ownership interest according to the Los Angeles Times. Says the LA Times:
The statements set the stage for what could be a protracted battle for control of the club between Jamie McCourt and her husband, Frank, who announced their separation late Wednesday.
“I firmly believe each of them is going to try to keep the team,” a high-ranking baseball source said today, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.
“I think it’s going to be pretty ugly.”
What is puzzling is that it seems they purchased the team during their marriage, in 2004. The LAT goes on to say:
Although Frank McCourt is listed as the owner and franchise “control person,” to major league baseball, the source said the couple presented themselves together for the approval of Commissioner Bud Selig, in advance of the McCourts’ 2004 purchase of the Dodgers.
If that is the case, why is there even a question that this is marital property subject to 50/50 distribution under California’s community property scheme? Am I missing something?
