NEW YORK: How to find a divorce lawyer on Craigslist. It’s amazing what you can find on Craigslist if you look. And it’s no wonder given that Craigslist ranks slightly behind Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Youtube as one of the top ranking websites on the web. That means it is one of the top 10 most trafficked websites on the entire Internet worldwide! That’s high praise when you consider that this divorce blog is in the top one million and Craigslist is in the top ten. How’s that for perspective?
As you know, Craigslist is a sort of marketplace where vendors sell their wares – from used cars, to furniture, to jobs, to legal services, to everything you can possibly think about or don’t want to think about. Is it the right place to look for a good divorce attorney? It depends who you ask.
When I first became a New York Divorce Attorney, one of the places I advertised was on Craigslist. People in my circles thought I was nuts or just desperate and maybe it was a bit of both. After all, back then, no self-respecting attorney would cop to getting clients from Craigslist. They associated Craigslist with illicit activities and a place where criminals like date-rapers, murderers and child abductors congregate. And I am not going to kid you. There have been some stories on the news about the kind of trouble one can get into by misusing Craigslist or taking it for granted too much.
Like anything else, caveat emptor. But don’t let a few bad apples discourage you from finding the right divorce lawyer for you. Not everything in life has to be expensive to be effective. Some of the best things in life are free.
Now, the attorney isn’t free, but you certainly don’t have to pay to find him or her. You can just get on your computer, type www.craigslist.com on your browser, click on legal services and find yourself a great attorney who can assist you with your divorce for less than $400 per hour that the big wig, plush carpet attorneys on Park Avenue will charge. And guess what? Several years later, I have discovered the most amazing thing. Many of these big wig plush carpet lawyers have also started to advertise on Craigslist!
I have to say, I’ve found some of my best divorce clients who later have become friends and contemporaries on Craigslist. Yes, I’ve found some crazies too. But for the most part, it’s been a positive experience.
