According to reports, there are nearly 400,000 orphans in Haiti. Well, correction. There were close to 400,000 prior to the earthquake but post-earthquake, there may be much more than that. Got me to wondering what will happen to all these children and who will get custody of them once the rubble clears? Certainly they all can’t get asylum in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, though uncharacteristically “neighborly” towards the Haitian refugees, can’t realistically be expected to subsidize this situation with this many orphaned children. What will happen to them? Who will get custody of them? Will they all be adopted by childless American and European couples? What will be their fate? I wonder.
