FLORIDA: Patriots star Jose Tabata's soon to be ex-wife convicted of faking pregnancy and kidnapping

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, then you hear something like this. This woman down in Florida was trying to stave off a divorce; so she tried to steal someone else’s baby and pass it off to her baseball player husband as her own. Listen to this one from the Associated Press:

A woman accused of faking a pregnancy and stealing a baby to fool her baseball player husband into thinking he was the father has pled guilty. Amalia Tabata-Pereira, 44, pled guilty in Hillsborough Circuit Court on Wednesday on charges of kidnapping, interference with custody and impersonating a public officer. In March of 2009, Tabata-Pereira posed as an immigration official and threatened a migrant worker and her boyfriend with deportation if they didn’t give their baby girl to Pereira, prosecutors say. The mother complied, then contacted police six hours later to report a kidnapping. Tabata-Pereira is married to Pittsburg Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata.

Is this a bad soap opera story line or did someone in their right mind pull a stunt like this? What is wrong with people? And how was the baby to make it’s appearance into the family? He would just come home one day from playing ball and meet a screaming baby in the bassinet?
