In some Muslim countries, such as Saudia Arabia, it is quite alright for a man to divorce his wife by text message or SMS. All he has to do is type in the words “I divorce you” three times and it’s a done deal. Courts have recognized such divorces in countries such as Saudi Arabia.
But in Singapore, the courts have indicated that text message divorces do not pass muster. That is because with a text, it is hard to ascertain who is actually sending the message; there are too many elements of “doubt.”
the Syariah Court and the Registry of Muslim Marriages released a statement Tuesday saying they were “unanimous in their view that divorce through SMS is unacceptable.”
The question is, why was this ever acceptable in the first place?
