Can different political views lead to divorce?
Tomorrow is the midterm election and like everyone else, I can’t wait to see how things go. Looks like the Republicans have this one in the bag, but as President Obama says, it’s all dependent on actual turn out….
………….Got me to wondering whether politics can lead to divorce? That is, when a couple subscribes to differing political views can this cause enough stress in a marriage to lead to divorce? I can see how it could definitely lead to a lot of fighting and fighting (especially dirty fights) can definitely lead to divorce. Still, here in the U.S., political lines are becoming increasingly blurred anyways and so I am sure that most people can agree to disagree and go on with their lives. I don’t predict that it leads to a ton of divorces, except in those very rare and fringe circumstances.
I mean, I couldn’t marry a Republican, personally. And I’m someone who’s pretty apolitical in my views. I am a centrist, very very moderate. I don’t agree with something just because of loyalty to a political party. If it’s bullshit, it’s bullshit. If it makes sense, it makes sense. But a die-hard Republican? The ultra conservatives among us? We couldn’t happily mesh for long. And I guess that is the case for some people. Trouble is, by the time they realize it, it’s already too late. So the next best thing is a divorce.
That is why it is so important to vet these people during the dating process. It’s not so much even what political party they belong to. It’s what are their views? Their values? What are their beliefs? And how does what they say they believe in match up with their acts and behaviors? Because that is what drives me over the edge. Don’t tell me you believe in something and then you live a totally different way. Don’t be a hypocrite. It’s very hard to respect that in a person. That can cause a lot of friction in a relationship, I think. That can lead to the types of fights that lead to divorce.
As for tomorrow, looks like the Republicans are going to kick butt and “take back their country.” God Bless em, eh?
