BOOK REVIEW: Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman's Guide to True Love

TITLE: Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to True Love
AUTHOR: Dr. Christine B. Whelan

When you "marry smart" you won't end up divorced

PREMISE: If women waited to find the right person for them,
Marrying smart

deferred marriage till they know themselves, they can find true love even if they are older than the traditionally young under 30 bride.
Marry¬†Smart is really a treatise for older women who have achieved a lot in their professional lives, and thus have deferred getting married and starting a family. Many of these women feel there is a “success penalty” but Dr. Whelan busts these myths. She argues that successful women (who should not look to be “rescued”) have a high probability of getting married even in their forties. But with an added benefit: they are LESS LIKELY TO END UP DIVORCED than younger women who are less succesful and posses less formal education (on the average). The reason for this disparity in the divorce rates for successful women vs. younger and less established wives is, according to Dr. Whelan, older more successful women are more likely to marry by choice and not out of a sense of obligation, need, or even desperation. Ms. Whelan calls women in this demographic SWANS (Smart Women Achievers No Spouse) and she includes a marriage calculator to help women predict their chance of marriage.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone over the age of thirty who is worried that putting their career ahead of finding a partner might cause them to end up alone, or even in a desperate marriage that ends in divorce.
