NEWTON, MA–(Marketwire – 11/24/10) – The Divorce Center, an organization of professionals providing support and education for people going through separation or divorce, will host a professional development and networking program entitled “Same-Sex Divorce and Parentage for Same-Sex Couples” on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newton, MA. Offered for the first time, and to all professionals supporting divorcing and separating couples (e.g. attorneys, mediators, financial planners, social workers, and counselors), this program will be led by Joyce Kauffman, Esq., a trained mediator and collaborative lawyer specializing in family law.
The program will focus on the following topics related to same-sex divorce:
- The impact of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act;
- Custody and parentage issues;
- Portability of same-sex marriage; and
- Dissolution of domestic partnerships and civil unions.
The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the opportunity to network with other professionals serving divorcing couples. Complimentary hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available. The program lecture and discussion will be conducted from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

About Joyce Kauffman, Esq.
Attorney Joyce Kauffman is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Law as well as a trained mediator and collaborative lawyer. Her practice focuses exclusively on family law with an emphasis on issues impacting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Attorney Kauffman is a member of the Family Law Advisory Council of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, former co-chair of the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association (now known as the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association), and former chair of that organization’s family law section.
