Breaking news: Divorce good for men's health according to American Journal of Epidemiology study and Karolinska Institute in Stockholm

UK Guardian reports that the American Journal of Epidemiology and the Karolinska Institute in Stockhom have found that divorce may be good for men’s health. It makes them fitter, while, conversely, it tends to make women fatter.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, are based on checks on 9,000 men and women, with an average age of 45, over an eight-year period. They suggest men who go through a divorce pay more attention to their bodies in a bid to try and win a new mate.

I have to say, I am surprised by this study. I would have thought it would be the other way around. Since when in the history of man has a man had to make himself  “attractive” to attract a new mate? A man can be short, fat, toothless, homeless and unemployed (well, maybe not the latter) and still get the girl. What are these people talking about? There has always been less eligible men to go around for every eligible woman and so women have ALWAYS been the gender burdened with keeping themselves up to attract men? But apparently, the Karolinska Institute came out with a totally different finding. Very surprising.
This is bad news for women. And the damage to women’s health (which we blogged about way back) is pretty severe after a divorce. Apparently even when a woman remarries, she’s still suffered more severe harm from a divorce than a man. Interesting, no? Says the Guardian:

Last year, a US study found divorcees have 20 per cent more chronic illnesses, such as cancer, than those who never marry.  Even among those that remarry, the figure only drops to 12 per cent, suggesting much of the damage to health cannot be undone.

What can women do to help themselves? Not sure. The study didn’t offer any solutions, only highlights the problem. This is where we need all the divorce/health experts weighing in. One thing I would suggest is for every divorcing woman to sign up for a gym membership immediately after divorce, grab a friend, and hit the treadmill as if her life depends on it. Because, it just might.
