Divorce in Bollywood: Divorces and Break ups in Bollywood Are on the Rise
Divorce in Bollywood is now, officially, a thing. More and more Indian movie stars are having the same types of scandalous and salacious private lives that explode on TV screens across India when divorce occurs, as we see in the United States. Bollywood divorces for some reason almost always seem to shock Indian fans. In Hollywood, fans almost expect the divorces at any minute, it seems.
Why does there seem to be a sudden explosion of divorces in Bollywood? India’s movie industry has exploded in recent years and some people are saying that it will surpass Hollywood in a few years in terms of gross profits from its films. Can it also rival Hollywood in terms of divorces? In 2016 -2017 there were a lot of newsworthy break-ups in both Hollywood and Bollywood. In Bollywood last year, there were a record number of divorces of Bollywood stars. In India, they are calling
2016 the Year of the Breakups in Bollywood:
Some of the most discussed splits were those of Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Khan who also have two kids they nurture together. However, they have been friends even after their split. Also there is a huge buzz about Malaika Arora Khan and Arbaaz Khan’s divorce and how they failed to get along even after trying. Recently, after Shraddha Kapoor’s dragging out issue from Farhan Akhtar’s home, his split with wife Adhuna has also been come into light once again! Also there was this ugly split of Pulkit Samrat and his wife Shweta Rohira after Pulkit got linked up with Kaabil actress Yami Gautam. These and such other splits already made 2016 a year of break ups.
Just like Hollywood divorces, Bollywood divorces can be very expensive business transactions, comparatively speaking. Some of the most expensive Divorce in Bollywood include:
- Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur (about $1 million USD)
- Rhea Pillai and Sanjay Dutt (about $1 million USD)
- Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne ($62 million USD)
Indian divorce law makes divorce surprisingly easy for Bollywood actors to end their marriage. The laws for divorce in India are not unlike those in the USA. Except there does not seem to be a basis for IRRECONCILABLE DIFFERENCES which is very surprising.
The grounds for Indian divorce according to one website are:
Any Any marriage which is solemnized, whether before or after the commencement of the Hindu marriage Act, may be Dissolved by a decree of divorce, by either the Husband or the wife presenting the petition on the following grounds:
(i) Firstly having had voluntary sexual intercourse with any person other than his or her spouse
(ia) Secondly has treated the petitioner with cruelty after marriage; or
(ib) Thirdly: has deserted the petitioner for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the petition; or
(ii) Fourthly has changed is religion and has ceased to be a Hindu by conversion to another religion; or
*(iii) has been incurably of unsound mind, or has been suffering continuously or intermittently from mental disorder of such a kind and to such an extent that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent.
Based on these grounds, it would appear that Bollywood stars would have to blame their spouse for the divorce in some way and this would seem to increase the number of acrimonious and scandalous divorces in Bollywood as compared to Hollywood where most stars go the no-fault route.
With that all said, this is a new area of focus and we shall keep you updated on any Bollywood divorce news we hear.
